This week I have thoroughly enjoyed Channel 4’s ‘Chicken Run’ which has seen Hugh Fearnely-Whittingstall of Riverstone Cottage set up his own Chicken Farm with incredible results, passionate TV programming and a lot of laughts a long the way.

Hugh is on a mission as he campaigns for a free range future and his prime objective is to convert the town of Axminster, a population of 6,000 people to go completely free range. Hugh wants to show the people of this town just how Chicken’s are born and bred couped up in intensive chicken farms, after trying to persuade chicken farm owners to allow him to film and being rejected he decided to set up his own intensive chicken farm and a free range one.

One of the things that intrigued me about this programme is that Hugh was basically working with a council estate to try and persuade them to go free range. Individuals on this council estate had no qualms about stating the fact that it is okay for Hugh to encourage the world to go free range with the amounts of money in his bank account but for some it is a luxury that they cannot afford. One woman went as far to say that Hugh should spend some time with them and see what life is really like! It was interesting that this footage was kept in the programme as it was Hugh’s own production Keo Films who produced the programme. Nevertheless, this despise for all people who had money was certainly turned around when these same people started to fall in love with the little chicks and found it hard that they would be killed for food.

An interesting and thought provoking programme which was crafted very well - it certainly got me thinking about the food that I eat.

Keo Films are a group of experienced programme creators who I have had the pleasure to meet and it would be awesome to work with them in the future.
